The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Gainesville is hosting a kickoff event today to announce “Crazy: A Community Read” at noon at the Alachua County Administration Building in downtown Gainesville.

NAMI-Gainesville is sponsoring a community read of the book “Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness” by former Washington Post reporter Pete Earley. The project is receiving funding from a grant from Gladys Cofrin and Dan Logan.

Hundreds of copies are being distributed in the community. In April, many small groups will get together to discuss what they’ve read, according to a news release. NAMI-Gainesville is also inviting community leaders to read the book and take part in discussion groups open to the public next month.

During the kickoff event at noon, families with experience involving mental illness will be among the speakers, according to the news release.
